Report

Due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic the GAA Rounders 2020 season was reduced to just two groups of four each playing a single-round robin in the Senior Ladies All-Ireland Championship. Adamstown Rounders, Erne Eagles and Limekiln Rounders GAA played out a very competitive Group A with Adamstown finishing first on 14 points, Erne Eagles second on 13 and Limekiln third on 12. Cuchulainn finished out of the running with three straight losses. In Group B Glynn Barntown won the Group title with a close 9-8 victory over Breaffy GAA in the Final Gameweek, leaving Breaffy in second, with Michael Glaveys third and Barntown Gaels fourth.

The All-Ireland Finals were postponed until after the lockdown restrictions are due to be lifted in May 2021. On June 13th 2021 in Abbottstown, Dublin (National Sports Centre) Breaffy held out to win 8-6 with the play of the day happening in the bottom of the 6th inning when Avril Coyne caught the batter out at second base and fired the ball back to Home Base to get a runner out there, leaving Glynn-Barntown to score three to win and two to draw. Breaffy closed out the match with a catch by Olivia Tolster in what was a real defensive battle according to reports with great fielding by Katie Kenny and Michelle Hopkins for the Mayo team.

Report

Greystones Mariners were founded as a Little League Team in 1991 in the small Co. Wicklow town, graduating to the Irish Baseball League (Adult) 10 years later where they posted a winning 12-6 record in their third year in 2004, qualifying for the Playoff Final, and the following year going 8-0 to win the 1st Half Pennant only to finish the Championship 2nd Half 1-5.

They qualified for the playoff each of the next five years (2006-2010) before a slump set in, finishing with losing records from 2011 to 2013. 2014 was another losing year until a remarkable run towards the end of the season saw them climb from bottom to reach the playoffs in fourth place where they proceeded to defeat Belfast North Stars, Dublin Spartans and the Dublin City Hurricanes in the playoffs, sweeping the Hurricanes 2-0 in a shock result. They were finalists each of the next five years before again taking the A League Championship 2 games to 1 versus Ashbourne Giants in 2020.

Report

Galway Softball Club, founded in 1998 and one of the oldest Softball teams in Ireland, has after 23 years, and thanks to generous sponsors, managed to field enough teams to form the first Galway Softball League in history. While there was a Cadet Baseball League back in 1970, this is the very first time since Softball Ireland was founded as the Irish Softball Association in 1989 that such a sanctioned league has taken place in Galway or West of the Shannon River. The four teams are An Púcán Base Invaders; Kenny’s Bookshop Hardbacks; Irishscores Hit Squad and Megadale Aqua Blasters.

History

One of the original Irish Baseball league teams in 1997, the Belfast NorthStars travelled down to Dublin to play in the early years, before a permanent Home Ground was built in Hydebank Park in Belfast. They reached the Irish Baseball League Playoffs in 2003 and Trophy Playoffs in 2005, winning the second level Championship. They qualified for the Baseball Ireland A-League Playoffs in 2011, 2013 and 2014. They dropped down to the B-League in 2015. Their greatest achievement is winning the All-Ireland Championship in 2016, defeating the Dublin City Hurricanes B. They won the B-1 League Pennant and Championship in 2019, but lost the B-League Final. The NorthStars were B-1 League Pennant Winners and Runners-Up in the B League Playoffs in 2019 but did not compete in a COVID-virus-shortened 2020 season.

History

Dublin Spartans are the longest continually-running Adult Baseball Team in Ireland along with the Dublin City Hurricanes, both having been formed in 1998 (the second season of the Irish Baseball League) and have won most League Pennants and Playoff Championships between them (Greystones Mariners are older but started as a Little League Team). After the inaugural 1997 season it was decided to start afresh with an all-player draft for all-new teams.

The Dublin Spartans were thus born and the Dublin Spartans almost immediately set about dominating the Irish Baseball League, winning the League Pennant in 1999, 2000 and 2002, Playoff Championship in 2004 as well as the Irish Baseball Cup in 2003 and (there was a separate League and Cup prior to 2004 as is the way with Traditional Irish and British Sports such as Soccer). They Qualified for the Second Half Championship League in 2005 (The League was split halfway between an Upper Half and Lower Half) and reached the Playoff Final.

In 2006 the Irish Baseball League was reorganised with the Top 4 teams forming the Baseball Ireland A League and the Bottom 4 becoming B Teams of the A League Teams in the new Baseball Ireland B League. This was the start of an 8 year Playoff Championship run for the Dublin Spartans where they took home the Title on all 8 occasions, in spite of on four occasions finishing second in the League and once third (the other three League Pennants they won as well as the Playoff Championship – 2006, 2008, 2013).

The core of the team had by now retired from playing and the Dublin Spartans and they were to only reach the Playoff semi-Finals each year from 2014 to 2018 inclusive. In 2019 and 2020 they finished with losing seasons both years and out of the playoffs. They nevertheless are the greatest Irish Baseball League team in the relatively short history of the League with a record 9 A League Playoff Championships, 5 League Pennants and 1 Cups.

History

Giants Baseball Team replaced Blue Devils in the Irish Baseball League after the 2004 season. They played the one season as Giants before the teams which played in the Second Half Trophy Section (Lower League) were made B teams of the teams which played in the Second Half Championship Section. Having gone 3-4 (Wins-Losses) in the First Half and thus being the leading team entering the Second Half Trophy Section they could well have fancied their chances of reaching the Trophy Final or even winning the Trophy but were only to win two of their eight games. They were then made a B team of one of the A League teams in 2006 when the Championship and Trophy were renamed the Baseball Ireland A League and B League (For the 2006 season Division 1 (A) and Division 2 (B)).
