Tuam Galway Cadet Baseball 1970

Report

A U.S. County Court Judge, Arthur O’Dea, whose grandparents were from Woodford, Co. Galway, arranged the first ever exhibition match of Baseball in Galway in August 1970. The match took place at Parkmore, Tuam, and involved teenagers from the locality, some of whom picked up the game fairly quickly. The Judge had hoped to have set up a League by the time he travelled back to Berger County, New Jersey, where he was from.

He left a set of Baseball bats with the Christian Brothers in Tuam and by September the boys in the Youth Club were playing regularly. He had also hoped to organise a match in New Jersey the following year between Irish and American teams, and had promised the boys if they were championship standard he would bring them to the United States in 1971 for the match.

Match Reports

Week 1 – May 24 2021 – Brawlers 45 Aces 12 – Henry Jones Playing Fields, Belfast

In very windy conditions which made pitching very difficult Brawlers began the defence of their title with a 45-12 victory over their B team Aces. The wind not only made pitching difficult but also meant the big hitting game they had hoped for did not materialise. nonetheless, it was a good experience for new players on both teams making their competitive debut. [References: 8]

Week 2 – May 31 2021 – Belfast Sliders 25 Smokin’ Aces 20 – Dixon Park Playing Fields, Grand Parade, Belfast

Belfast Sliders won their opening game of the season 25-20 versus Aces in a fun game with great Bank Holiday weather for the occasion. [References: 9-11]

Week 2 – May 31 2021 – Brawlers 27 Bangor Buccaneers 4 – Henry Jones Playing Fields, Belfast.

Brawlers went to 2-0 with a 27-4 victory at home to Bangor Buccaneers, playing a tight defence to restrict the Bucs to just the four runs. The weather was fantastic and the Brawlers were brilliant with their hitting and fielding. The Bucs, however, made some great catches so they were happy with their progress against the defending Champions. [Reference: 11-12]

Week 3 – June 7 2021 – Belfast Sliders 3 Belfast Cubs 25 – Dixon Park Playing Fields, Grand Parade, Belfast

Belfast Cubs finally swung into action in week 3 of the 2021 SU season and playing a patient game against a new pitcher in his first season at the plate for near neighbours Belfast Sliders they took a 7-1 lead in the second innings. A strong defensive display meant the Cubs were not in the field too long as they put up 5 shutout innings and added two more big innings in the fourth (8 runs) and the sixth (6 runs). Cubs shortstop Chris won the MVP as they won 25-3 (Most Valuable Player Award). [Reference: 13-14]

Report

Due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic the GAA Rounders 2020 season was reduced to just two groups of four each playing a single-round robin in the Senior Ladies All-Ireland Championship. Adamstown Rounders, Erne Eagles and Limekiln Rounders GAA played out a very competitive Group A with Adamstown finishing first on 14 points, Erne Eagles second on 13 and Limekiln third on 12. Cuchulainn finished out of the running with three straight losses. In Group B Glynn Barntown won the Group title with a close 9-8 victory over Breaffy GAA in the Final Gameweek, leaving Breaffy in second, with Michael Glaveys third and Barntown Gaels fourth.

The All-Ireland Finals were postponed until after the lockdown restrictions are due to be lifted in May 2021. On June 13th 2021 in Abbottstown, Dublin (National Sports Centre) Breaffy held out to win 8-6 with the play of the day happening in the bottom of the 6th inning when Avril Coyne caught the batter out at second base and fired the ball back to Home Base to get a runner out there, leaving Glynn-Barntown to score three to win and two to draw. Breaffy closed out the match with a catch by Olivia Tolster in what was a real defensive battle according to reports with great fielding by Katie Kenny and Michelle Hopkins for the Mayo team.

Report

Conal Fagan was born in Derry, and excelled at soccer. Two teenagers from his school, st. Columb’s in Derry had gone to study in the USA before him, so he was inspired by them to look into it, and got a scholarship from the Sutton Trust, which helps young people from low and middle income families to apply to colleges in America.

Conal chose Notre Dame, the famous Irish Catholic College in South Bend, Indiana, near Chicago, where he started studying Political Science and Peace Studies. His College roommates thought it would hilarious if a real Irishman was a Notre Dame Fighting Irish Leprechaun, the mascot of the College Football team. He tried out and got on the cheerleading squad.

After playing Soccer in his first year he then concentrated on the Cheerleading Leprechaun Mascot Role as well as his studies, training four times a week and lifting weights twice a week. He learned backflips and his role would have been as part of a team whose job is to get the fans to cheer on the team. He will be continuing the role in the 2020-21 season.

Notre Dame finished with a 12-1 Wins-Losses record in 2018-19, only losing to Clemson Tigers in the prestigious Cotton Bowl, and in 2019-20, they went 11-2, triumphing 33-9 in the Camping World Bowl against Iowa State Cyclones, so the Cheerleading squad can’t have let the team down.
