Report

Indigo Icons played in their first competitive Softball outing during August 1998 in the Dublin Bay Challenge Series, matching up quite well against Dublin Bay Packers, losing 27-19 after six innings to a team that had been playing League Softball for three years. They followed this up with a narrow 21-23 loss to Fallen Angels. In September the Fallen Angels wrapped up the Weekend League Series in the decider with Dublin Bay Packers, triumphing 20-3. The Dublin Bay Challenge Series was a Weekend Softball League that was intended to feature four teams, but Pigs in Space pulled out before the start.

Report

While the Women’s Slowpitch League took a break for 2000, the Leinster Softball Association replaced it as the Weekend League with the Gemstorm-sponsored Co-Ed Winter League, which ran for three seasons. The 1999-2000 Winter League was a close race after 2 of 5 rounds with Cougars, Lions and Cheetahs all posting 3-1 Wins-Losses Records. Panthers, Leopards and Pumas all had one win each, with Pumas forfeiting their Week 2 matches.

Report

Marlay Martyrs’ Female Team, the M&Ms again won the Leinster Softball Association Ladies League in 1999, although this time they were pushed all the way by new team Easyriders, who finished just one win, and three points behind the M&Ms.

Easyriders became the second ever team to beat the team from Marlay Park in Rathfarnham when defeating them 10-4 on the last round of play, although by then the M&Ms had wrapped up the title. It was a loss to Brazen Hussies (who in 1997 were the only other team to ever win against the M&Ms), by the narrowest of margins (10-9) which in the end cost the Easyriders a share of first place. Brazen Hussies finished in mid-table with five wins from 10.

The Eadyriders were among a trio of teams who replaced the Oddsox Nonads, Foxy Sluggers and AIB Loan Homers Lisa from 1998 – the other two new teams were Dolly Birds (5-5, 35 Points), and Firebirds (1-8, 1 Forfeit, 21 Points). She Devils were the other team to return from the previous year, finishing 2-8 (22 Points).

Report

The West Coast Series of Softball Friendlies was extended in 2009 with Cork Hammerheads visit to Tralee to play a local team on 21 June, coming away with two victories. The Kerry team (Kerry Green Sox?) also planned a return visit later in the year as well as two two more Galway-Cork series of Challenge matches, but there is no evidence of any of these happening. The following year the first proper League season on the West Coast, involving Galway Tribes, Cork Hammerheads, Limerick Originals and West Clare Dolphins took place.

Report

Galway Tribes and Cork Hammerheads agreed to play two series of Challenge matches either side of the Irish Open Softball Tournament in Limerick in August 2008. In the first series in Cork on 19th July , Galway went 7 runs down in the first innings, but clawed their way back to lead, although they eventually lost by one run. The second match saw Cork win by four runs as the effect of a 3 hour journey to Cork took its toll on the Galway players. The second series in Galway on 13th September was forfeited by Cork due to lack of numbers.

Report

The Colored World Series was not played from 1929 to 1936. The American Negro League reappeared in 1929, although with the effects of the Great Depression, Both the Negro National League and Negro American League had disbanded in 1932 to be replaced for that year only by the East-West League and the Southern Negro League. The Southern Negro League had a team called the Little Rock Travelers, from Arkansas. The conditions of Irish Travelers has often been compared to that of African-Americans. In 1933 the Negro National League returned, although there was still no Colored World Series as the American Negro League did not reappear until 1937.

With Segregation in American Sport as with practically all parts of US Society at the time, the top African-American Sportsmen played in the Negro Leagues as they called themselves at the time. These Baseball Leagues were the National Basketball Association of the time, equal with the Major Leagues as we know them today, although excluded from playing from them due to their skin colour, race or ethnic background.

From interviews with fans conducted by Dick Clark and Larry Lester of the Society for American Baseball Research it can be seen that they saw the Leagues as Eastern and Western Leagues, even though most Leagues went by the name Negro National League and American Negro League. The Statistics gleaned from what was reported in the newspapers give only a partial record, and show the top players were the equal of the top players in Major League Baseball at the time, something which has been recognised recenltly (2021) by MLB.

The term Negro for African-Americans has fallen out of favour in recent times, much like the term Tinker for Irish Travelers, whose conditions have often been compared to African-Americans. It has been kept here and by MLB to prevent re-writing of history.

There were many players with Irish surnames or family names on the teams, perhaps as many as two dozen in 1920 alone.

The Negro National League and American Negro League returned in 1933 and lasted until 1952 as Major Leagues (although only until 1946 are recognised as such by MLB when Jackie Robinson became the first ever African-American to play in Major League Baseball when he played for the Montreal Royals).

Report

Kansas City Monarchs won the Colored World Series in 1924, Hilldale in 1925 and Chicago American Giants in 1926 and 1927, the only years during this period it was played. There was no league in 1932, the most difficult year of the Great Depression.

Those who won the Colored World Series from 1924 to 1927 are listed below. Hurley McNair, Walter Moore, Harold Morris, and Wilber Rogan of Kansas City Monarchs in 1924, Luther Farrell of Hilldale in 1925, and George Harney of Chicago American Giants in 1926 and 1927.
