About Comets Baseball

Comets Baseball moved to Peace Link Park in Clones, Co. Monaghan shortly before the 2016 season started, thus requiring the team name to be changed from Cavan Comets to simply Comets Baseball. In their first season in Monaghan they went 4-18, finishing fourth of four teams in the B League North Division, thereafter steadily improving, going 5-13 in 2017, finishing 6th out of 7 in the B League North. A slight drop in form in 2018 ( 3-15, sixth of 7 teams), was followed by a 5-14 season in 2019 (finishing fourth of four in the B-2 League) and then a 4-5 season in the 2020 B League North Division, finishing 3rd of four teams. 2022 was a huge inprovement for the team, going 8-3 in the B League Upper, finishing second of five teams, and reaching the B Playoff Final, before losing 7-9 to Mariners Baseball B team. Report

There was an expanded Baseball Ireland B League in 2014, featuring B teams of all five returning A League teams (Dublin teams the City Hurricanes, Spartans and Black Sox as well as the Greystones Mariners and Belfast North Stars), as well as the B team of new team the Dublin Tigers, representing a Venezuelan company in Ireland, and regional teams the West Clare Dolphins, Cavan Comets and Ashbourne Giants. Dublin City Hurricanes B won the League Pennant and Championship, defeating Belfast North Stars B 13-1 and 14-1 in the best-of-three games Final Series. Cavan Comets reached the Semi-Finals after knocking out Ashbourne Giants, both teams best season yet, knocking out Greystones Mariners B and Dublin Black Sox B respectively in the Playoffs First Round. Cormac Eklof pitched superbly for the Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Final and Jose Martinez in Game 2 in what was a one-sided Final Series.

About Baseball and Baseball Ireland

Baseball is a bat-and ball game where players aim to hit a ball thrown at them by a pitcher and run around four bases back home without being caught or run out. A run is scored when a player gets back to home base. It is similar to the GAA game of Rounders, but the bases are 90 feet apart rather than 60 and pitching can be overarm. There are 9 Innings for each team in a standard Baseball game (seven in the case of thw Baseball Ireland B-League) and when three players on a team are out that is the end of the innings for the team. A teams innings is not over until three outs are made. It was first played in America, but is thought to have an ancestor in the Irish and British game of Rounders (and also similar games in Germany and Scandinavia such as Branboll). In Ireland it is Coed (Mixed).

Report

It was a fairytale end for Greystones Mariners, in last place until the last month of the season, as they climbed above Dublin Black Sox and newcomers Dublin Tigers in the standings to make the playoffs, where they kept the momentum, beating first Belast North Stars 3-1, then shocking defending nine-times Chamions Dublin Spartans 11-7 in the Semi-Final before triumphing over the Dublin City Hurricanes, undefeated until then, 3-1 and 8-4 in the A League Final. Dublin City Hurricanes had yet again the disappointment of winning the A League Pennant with an unblemished 15-0 Regular Season record only to lose the Final. Thanks for the victory was handed to the defensive work of Gareth Donnelly, Tommy Hernandez and Jack Fairbairn and the big hits of Enrique Verea. It was the first time in 10 years that the title had not been won by the Dublin Spartans. In all there were six teams in the A League with newcomers Dublin Tigers, representing a Venezuelan company in Ireland replacing Munster Warriors, although they pulled out with five games left.

Report

In one of the most competitive ever seasons of the Irish Baseball League, the Dublin Spartans won the League Pennant with an 11-4 Record (48 Points), just 2 games ahead of both the Dublin Black Sox and Belfast North Stars (9-6), with Dublin City Hurricanes also making the playoffs a further game behind (8-7). The other two teams in the A League, the Greystones Mariners (5-10) and Munster Warriors also competed well with the two traditional powers Dublin City Hurricanes and Dublin Spartans. Dublin Black Sox shocked the Spartans in the First Playoff Match, winning 2-1 to go straight into the A League Final, sending the Spartans into a Semi-Final with the winners of the Second Playoff Match, Dublin City Hurricanes, where the Spatans prevailed 5-4. In the A League Final, however, the Dublin Black Sox could not repeat their heroics of the Playoff victory and the Spartans won two narrow games to take the best-of-three series.

About Baseball
