History

Black Sox Baseball Club were founded in 2001, and played their first season at Corkagh Park in Clondalkin, Dublin 22. They opened the season with two wins versus Blue Devils. In 2002 they had a very successful season, finishing third with 13 wins from 18 games, and also posted a winning season in 2003 and 2004. The 2005 season was split halfway into a Championship section and a lower half Trophy section. the Black Sox qualified for the Championship section and finished third again, scoring 7-7 over the entire season.

This enabled them to play in the newly named Baseball Ireland A League for 2006 with the Trophy teams relegated to B team status of the A League teams. It was around this time that the Dublin teams added Dublin to their name and the Dublin Black Sox moved into a new field which had yet to be fully developed in Shanganagh Park, Shankill, Co. Dublin (Co. Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown). They finished runners-up to the Dublin Spartans in both the League and the Playoff Final in what was to prove their best ever season. They went 10-4 during the Regular season that year, the least losses for the team ever in a season and their only season ever reaching the A League Final.

From 2007 to 2009 inclusive the Black Sox put up winning records (9-6, 10-5, 10-6) and qualified for the Playoffs each year but but lost in the first or second match-up each time without again reaching the Final. Three losing seasons followed although a slight recovery in the third year of that stretch in 2012 saw the Dublin Black Sox again reach the Playoffs. Second Place in the League followed in 2013 but yet again playoff disappointment. A big slump followed in 2014 with the Black Sox only recording 3 wins and they were to never to win more than that again from then to their final year in 2017 which was preceded by their B Team dropping out of the B League after 2016.

While never reaching the heights of their more successful neighbours in Clondalkin – the Dublin City Hurricanes and Dublin Spartans – nor their co-tenants in Shanganagh Park towards the end of the 2010s – the Greystones Mariners – they nonetheless played an important part of the four-team backbone of the Baseball Ireland A League from the opening of Shanganagh Park in 2006 to the opening of the Ashbourne International Baseball Centre in Co. Meath in 2017.
