Tampa Bay Rays got off to a perfect start winning series versus Detroit Tigers (3 games to nil), at Washington Nationals (3 games to nil) and versus Oakland Athletics (1 game to nil) to start the 2023 MLB season 7-0. Other early division leaders were Atlanta Braves, American League (AL) East leaders on 6-4 (winning 2-1 at Washington Nationals, 3-0 at St. Louis Cardinals and 1-3 versus San Diego Padres); Milwaukee Brewers 7-2, AL Central leaders (2-1 at Chicago Cubs, 3-0 versus New York Mets and 2-1 versus St. Louis Cardinals); and San Diego Padres, leading the AL West on 6-4 following a 2-2 series tie with Colorado Rockies, 1-1 series tie versus Arizona Diamondbacks and a 3-1 series victory at Atlanta Braves.
In the National League (NL) Tampa Bay Rays were leading the NL East on 7-0; Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins were leaders of the NL Central on 6-3 (Minnesota had won their opening series 3-0 at Kansas City Royals, lost by 2-1 at Miami Marlins but won the third series 2-1 at home to Houston Astros). The NL West had two teams tied for the lead on 5-4: Los Angeles Angels (2-1 winners at Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners and a 1-2 series loss at home to Toronto Blue Jays) and Texas Rangers (3-0 opening series at home to Philadelphia Phillies, followed by a 1-2 loss at home to Baltimore Orioles and a 1-2 loss at Chicago Cubs . About Major League Baseball 2023
The 2023 Major League Baseball season features 30 teams divided into two leagues and six divisions of five teams each. In European terms it is a North American Super League featuring a team in Canada (Toronto Blue Jays) as well as 29 teams spread across every region of the United States of America. During the Regular Season each team shall play 54 series of 3 games each on average for a 162-game season, with the six division winners qualifying for the playoffs along with the two best runners-up in each league.
Following a straight knockout (single elimination) system within each league the two league winners meet in the best-of-seven World Series. The World Series has been competed for since 1901 when the American League was formed, becoming the second Major League alongside the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs (usually shortened to National League).
