ABOUT Softball Leinster

The Leinster Softball League has its’ origins in the Dublin Softball League (1982-1989) which became a founder member of Softball Ireland in 1990 after teams were discovered also playing Softball in Limerick and Cork. Now known as Softball Leinster, the Leinster Softball League is one of three Provincial Softball Organisations in Ireland – Softball Ulster and Softball Connacht Munster are the other two – with the winners of each Provincial League competing for the Softball Ireland National Club Championship.

Softball has three main variations: Fastpitch Softball where the Pitching can be as fast as in Baseball is primarily a Women’s Sport with a Professional League and College League in USA being the top leagues in the world; Slowpitch Softball where the pitching is underarm also but in a soft arc and much slower; and Indoor Softball which is as its’ name suggests played indoors. In the Indoor variation if the ball is hit off the far end wall and bounces back onto the ‘field’ without being touched it is a home run. Also in the Indoor variation a team loses a point for each player out and gains a point for each base reached without an out and getting home. The other two variations on Softball the scoring is very like Baseball with a point (called a ‘Run’) scored when a player makes it all the way around the four bases back home.

The away team (‘road’ team) bats first (this is called the top of the inning) and the home team second (bottom of the inning) in each inning. An inning is over whenever the batting team has three players caught, run, or struck out.

A player does not have to get all the way around the four bases back home in the one play (‘at bat’) but can do so over a number of plays (players ‘at bat’). When a player makes it all the way around the four bases back home on the one play (in other words when the player ran all the way around four bases back home on their own hit) it is called a Home Run. Players may be struck, caught or run out. In addition when at home plate attempting to hit a pitch players have three strikes to be out but four ‘balls’ pitched (in other four bad pitches). If four ‘balls’ are pitched before three strikes the player may advance to first base. A player must run to first base when they hit the ball. If the ball passes over home plate within the ‘strike zone’ (an area the width and depth of home plate and from the batters chest to their waist). Weekly Recaps

Week 1 (26 April 2022)

Dynamoes started with an 11-2 defeat of Batpak, TNT with a 27-12 win at newly promoted Castleknock Bearcats and Kegs won 22-12 at Hippetys Hippie Monsters. [References: 2]

Weeks 2-6 (3 May-31 May 2022)

Dodder Dynamoes were out in front at the end of May with a 5-1 record, one game ahead of three teams: TNT, Kegs and Batpak, all on 4-2. Castleknock Bearcats were 1-4 with one forfeit following a 17-15 victory on 17 May versus Hippetys Hippie Monsters who were in last place on 0-5 and one forfeit. The Championship however was going to be between the Dynamoes who had only lost to 17-18 at home to Kegs in week 5 on 24 May. Kegs had lost in weeks 2 and 3 to TNT (19-26) and Batpak (12-18) but recovered with three straight wins. TNT had also lost twice, on 3 May (8-14 at Batpak) and 17 May (2-16 at home to Dodder), while Batpak lost to Dodder Dynamoes for the second time in the SL Premier Division season 2022 after going down 2-16 at home in week 6. [References: S-1 to S-6]

Weeks 7-10 (7 June-5 July 2022)

By the end of the regular season, when each of the six teams had played each other home and away, the Premier League was split into a Championship Group and a Relegation Group, each of three teams, to play each other once more for a 12 game season.

Dodder Dynamoes as would be expected given the teams history, topped the Regular season standings with eight wins and two losses, alongside Batpak, also on an 8-2 record. Kegs took third with a 6-4 record. Dynamoes managed the feat despite a shock loss in week 8 to Castleknock Bearcats who finished the regular season 3-6 plus one forfeit. Hippetys Hippie Monsters propped up the table without a win and TNT missed out on the Championship Group due to a week 8 forfeit to Kegs, finishing one victory behind the Dublin 4 team. [References: S-1 to S-6]

Weeks 11-13 (Playoffs – 26 July-2 August 2022)

After both teams had defeated Kegs in weeks 11 and 12, Dodder Dynamoes and Batpak squared off on the 9 August 2022 for a winner-takes-all final match. Both teams were sitting at the top of the standings on 9 wins and 2 losses after Batpak had defeated Kegs 6-4 on 26 July and Dynamoes had won 22-2 at the Kegs the following Tuesday. Kegs finished the season 6-6. [References: S-1 to S-6]

Meanwhile at the other end of the table, Hippetys Hippie Monsters, despite not winning a game all season, defeated both their Relegation Group rivals, TNT by 17-12 and then Castleknock Bearcats by 26-6 but still finished last. The final Tuesday of the season saw TNT defeated Castleknock Bearcats 22-13 to finish with a 6-5 and 1 forfeit record. [References: S-1 to S-6]

The game which would decide the title was won by Dodder Dynamoes 12-7 at Batpak as the Dynamoes defeated their rivals for the third time in the 2022 Softball Leinster Premier Division, in fact the only team to beat Batpak at all during the SL season. For the record Dodder Dynamoes finished the season 10-2 and Batpak 9-3. [References: S-1 to S-6]

About Softball Leinster Premier Division 2022

The Leinster Softball League is a Coed Slowpitch Softball League in Leinster Province, Ireland. It is currently at a 5:5 Male:Female Ratio although in its early days it was 9:1 Male:Female. There was a Female Slowpitch League from 1997-2002 which was League for Competitive Females from the top Divisions in the Leinster Softball League.

The most successful clubs over the entire history of the League have been Dodder Dynamoes (the oldest Softball team in Ireland) and Marlay Martyrs (both based in South Dublin suburbs – Marlay in Marlay Park, Rathfarnham (D14) and Dodder Dynamoes originally from Dodder Park, Dartry and now nomadic.

The League is Coed, originally 8:2 Ratio of Men:Women, until it levelled to 5:5 twice – in the late-1990s and in 2017.

The 2022 Softball Leinster Premier Division Season started with six teams, as in 2021, with Marlay Martyrs taking the season out, and being replaced by promoted Castleknock Bearcats. Temple Bar Hippetys merged with their B team becoming Hippetys Hippie Monsters. [References: 2]
